More model informationThis large zircon crystal is over 50 millimetres in size. Although many flaws are present and it is probably not the entire crystal, several crystal faces are identifiable (tertragonal dipyramid and prism faces as labelled). Although I am not entirely sure of its origin, I am fairly sure it is from the Mud Tank Carbonatite Complex in Australia’s Northern Territory, which is host to many uncommon minerals including zircon megacrysts. The Mud Tank Carbonatite Complex is a late Proteroizoic (~730 Ma) intrusion, and zircons from the complex are used in mass-spectrometry laboratories world wide for their U/Pb and Hf standards.
