Woodchucks (Marmota monax), also known as groundhogs, whistlepigs, and many other colorful appellatives, are lowland rodents native to North America. They are one of the largest species in the family Sciuridae. It is typical for woodchucks to assume this upright posture to search for predators while foraging during the day. This specimen has been affectionately described as the “awkward school photo” woodchuck by students at the Nature Lab.
A few interesting facts about woodchucks: * they have white teeth which is uncharacteristic for rodents * baby woodchucks are called “chucklings” * the term ‘woodchuck’ is adapted from the Algonquin term for this animal = ‘wuchak’
