An incomplete copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 4.a. Plate 46, of Roman date (AD 80 to AD 120).
Approximately 50% of the brooch is present, with the pin, catch-plate and foot missing.
In plan, the brooch is almost T-shaped, and D-shaped in cross section. The bow head is hump-like, and angular (comma shaped) in profile, with cylindrical wings projecting from either side at the top. Each wing has a semi circular pierced wing cap. Ridges are present at the shoulders of the brooch. The back of the brooch is undecorated. The spring is present behind the wings, secured in a cylindrical groove. Two coils from the pin are separate. The foot is missing.
The brooch measures 20.3 mm in length, is 19.3 mm wide across wings and 14.5 mm thick. It weighs 5.6 g.
