A complete copper alloy annular brooch of Medieval dating (c.AD 1250-1400).
The brooch is circular in plan with a frame that is, barring decorative feature, D-shaped in cross section with a flat reverse and convex upper surface. The outer face is also decorated with six raised broadly hexagonal collets that are taller and wider than the frame of the brooch. Each of these have circular cells within them, one of which contains traces of white cement material within them, probably the remains of a fixative for holding jewels in place. Between each collet, the frame narrows and then swells in the centre to form a wider area. The pin is secured between two collets with a circular perforation. The copper alloy wire pin is then wrapped around the hole so that it pivots. Soil still adheres to the surface of the frame, preventing closer identification of the surface decoration.
