An iron fragment of an axe-shaped mount, dating to the Early Medieval period, circa AD 580-650.
The object consists of an axe-shaped fragment from a mount terminal. The obverse is decorated with an axe shaped border made from a copper-alloy strip. Within the border is a decorative pattern in light relief, consisting of style II, animal art. The pattern has been gilded. The reverse and sides of the object are undecorated and covered in orange corrosive material. No attachements are on the reverse.
The object measures 28.1mm in length and 43.5mm in width. It has a maximum thickness of 8.2mm and weighs 16.5 grams.
