A circular flat lead seal matrix dating to the 13th century.
The matrix is circular in form with a pierced lug on the top of the reverse with a central raised ridge that has been somewhat worn. There is a relief decoration of a fleur-de-lis (upside down) which has been somewhat worn.
The die is engraved with a central motif of four radial lines. The north/south and east/west lines end in a straight serif, and the diagonal lines end in a central dot with two lower dots below.
Around the design in an engraved line and a surrounding inscription reading +S’hVGONIS[.]WhYTE[.] The letters are reversed so when struck, they will appear the right way round. The Sstands for sigilium, Latin for seal. The HUGONIS is an abbreviation for Hugh or Hugo. The initial mark is a cross. There are two additional engraved dots on the engraved line, below the letters W and h.
