TRURI : 1992.49.2a - Fitted silk and velvet basque bodice of a wine-red Victorian dress. Lace neckline and sleeves, with velvet lapels and cuffs. Front fastening with self-coloured covered buttons.
The dress would have been very warm and heavy, and worn in the colder months of the year. The dress is thought to have been worn by the donor or previous family members. The posterior shaping suggest a late 19th century date. The square neckline suggests an 1870s date, along with ruffles at neck and cuff hems, contrasting textures and basque waist line (this means it extends below the waist). The matching skirt incorporates the symmetry so desirable during the 1870s. The front fastening suggests day wear, though the cumbersome nature of the skirt may make you think otherwise.
