More model informationWilliam I reigned between 1165 and 1214. During his reign he was known as Garbh, ‘the rough’. He was not known as ‘the lion’ until after his death.
William founded Arbroath Abbey in 1178 in memory of his childhood friend Thomas Becket, who was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral. The abbey helped him expand his authority to the north east of Scotland and demonstrated his right to rule.
The coin shows the bust of William facing left, with the inscription ‘LE RAI WILAM’. It is one of hundreds of local history items collected in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Jane and Louisa Macdonald, sisters from the town of Arbroath.
