Elkridge Furnace Plank Buildings Site, 18HO308, Howard County, Maryland
Portion of a refined earthenware vessel with transfer printed William Ridgeway, Son & Co. maker’s mark. The full text of the mark would be “Harper’s Ferry From The Potomac Side” “WR S & C”. This maker’s mark likely would have been placed on the base of a flat vessel such as a plate.
Edward Ridgeway joined his father’s compnay in 1838, which formed William Ridgeway, Son & Co. The Ridgeways’ company produced mid-ranged American ceramics until 1847 before going bankrupt. Therefore this sherd can be dated from 1838-1847.
Recovered from an excavation at the Elkridge Furnace Plank Buildings site.
