This type of whalebone beater was used mainly in the southern nvk area by the Nuu-chah-nulth (formerly Nootka), Makah, Quinault and Quilleute tribes. These were whale hunters, and therefore had regular access to whale bones. These tribes were the only ones on the coast who were whale hunters. As these cudgels were very functional, there was some trade in them, and they were therefore used by tribes that were not whale hunters. This type of whalebone mallet was used to soften and work both red and yellow cedar bark.
