This site does not appear on either the OS 1st edition 6inch map (1878) or the second edition (1899), so presumably did not appear until the early 20th Century.
However, the earliest map of the area, Captain Otters survey shows this position occupied by a ‘Doon’. Presumably this was likely a ruined Iron Age structure of some type, possibly a hut circle or roundhouse. It must be assumed this was the source of the extensive masonry for this farmstead and enclosures.
The site has been extensively modified to create the fank later in the 20th Century but, surprisingly, no dip facility has been incorporated, so perhaps the conversion was done after 1990. The internal wooden fittings are still in good order, suggesting it is still in use for gathering, shearing and sorting of flocks. The smaller building might also be in use during lambing to offer some additional shelter.
A range-pole is on the grass near the centre of the area between the two ‘buildings’.
