I was looking for a sci-fi device or tool to practice some baking and somehow I’ve found this excellently designed ESAB “Rebel” welding machine. Using a reference photo I’ve modeled something similar-ish in high poly. Given that I had just a single 600x600px ref, I allowed myself quite a bit of liberty regarding dimensions and proportions. I then retopo’d to low poly and baked the required maps - and here’s the result.
The textures turned out pretty big - 4k looks nice, 2k is acceptable, 1k is straight up gross - but the model requires quite a lot of detail. Here AO is premultiplied with diffuse but it can also be combined with roughness and metalness as 3 color channels, while emission value can be added as a third channel to the normal map. Blender renders the face normals fine, but Sketchfab viewer seems to be finicky about weirdly shaped flat ngons, so some normal splitting may be required to use this model in different 3d environment.
