Ordered by The Ancient History Society of Kortrijk (KGOKK) a study with 3D scanning was performed on the spandrels in the Chapel of Counts in Kortrijk. Through an exhibition with 3D prints of the enlarged spandrels the public is brought closer to this unique heritage. The original high-poly model for 3D print made by TEN, was used as a reference to create this textured low-poly model.
On the spandrel we see ‘Vergilius in the basket’. According to a well-known story, Roman poet Vergilius courted the daughter of the emperor. The beautiful Lucretia rather turned down his advances and did so by trapping Vergilius. She told him that she would smuggle him into her bedchamber by hoisting him up in a basket. Half way Lucretia stopped lifting, leaving Vergilius dangling in the basket where he was mocked by the crowd. The people understood that Vergilius was victimized by his own lust. This theme was often used in Christian iconography to demonstrate that even a wise man can fall into sin.
