Utvrda Baterija - Milna otok Brač Croatia3D Model
Utvrda Baterija is located on Cape Zaglav, and was built in 1806 during the French administration. In order for the French to prevent the Russian fleet from occupying the central Dalmatian islands, they built fortifications on the western cape of Brač and installed a battery of four guns, and later strengthened it with 6 guns. The French hired 150 villagers from Brač for the construction because the French crew that came to Brač did not have enough men to build the fort. This maritime fort is still the largest fortification on Brač today, and is called the Battery in popular tradition. The condition of the Baterija fortress today is such that it has been preserved in a complete plan of an irregular pentagon and high jagged side defensive walls. Towards the sea, an embankment was built on the rocks. Although Napoleon did not visit Dalatia Province, Gustave Marmont was very active as a governor and actually did come to visit and supervise building process of this fortress.
