The area in and around Karlstein an der Thaya developed a well-known clock industry at the beginning of the 19th century. Already in the year 1759 a clockmaker is mentioned in the church books. In 1830, about 280 people were already producing a quantity of about 130,000 watches. Owning a watch from Karlstein was considered a luxury. Itinerant traders sold the watches from the Waldviertel all over the monarchy. After a crisis, the Uhrenfachschule was founded in 1873, which soon became the “k. u. k. Fachschule für Uhrenindustrie” was founded. Today, factories manufacture dial gauges or similar precision mechanical products. The school still exists, its curriculum has been expanded.
