The “500” series U-boats were the largest submarines built in their time nearly double the length of convention U-boats. Designed to carry and launch the updated V-1G the submersibles had a range of 17,000nm and could reach 27kts on the surface and 14 kts while submerged. With the use of of a low profile “breathing tube” they could stay submerged for up to a month. Only 4 examples were built between 1946 and 1949 and the ship was soon outmoded by more modern designs but for a time they were the only ships capable on launching a strike on any coastal city at a moment’s notice with complete impunity.
Seen here in it’s submerged, surface, and periscope depth configurations.
