More model informationThis is a trachyte, an uncommon kind of volcanic rock. It is a reddish brown, felsitic rock with small feldspar phenocrysts in a matrix of feldspar and minor amounts of highly altered mafic minerals. The feldspars are highly alterred, but were probably sanidine and oligoclase originally. The matrix feldspar is stained red by hematite. This sample is from Essex County, New York, USA. The sample is about 10 cm across.
