More model informationClachtoll broch was built on an uneven outcrop of bedrock, meaning that the interior of the building was much higher on the east side than on the west. In the lower area, the builders had constructed a curving passage with a flagstone floor. It is likely that this passage was capped with a wooden or wicker floor, forming a kind of underground storage area. This feature is very similar to a kind of Iron Age structure common in the Highlands called a ‘souterrain’. These underground passages are thought to be designed for food storage, and are often found in association with brochs.
