3D model of my scenic design for Anton Chekov’s “The Cherry Orchard,” created prior to building a 1/2” scale model for presentation purposes [https://youtu.be/2TNZ217i-sY].
This five act play is set at the ancestral estate of an aristocratic Russian family facing the loss of their home due to societal shifts and money troubles in the early 1900s. I decided to utilize the image of one commanding tree to represent the play’s central themes. The tree, which inhabits the center of the stage for the entirety of the show is a literal focal point for the audience and a metaphorical one for the characters. Like the elephant in the room, which is the auction of the estate, the tree is obviously there-but is often ignored by the characters.
Cherry trees also inspired the color palette for the show: browns and cherry pinks in dark to light shades (not accurately translated in this sketchup version).
