Shatrunjaya is the foremost pilgrimage place for the Shvetambara sect of Jains, one of two historical branches of Jainism. Occupying a hill outside the town of Palitana in Gujarat state, this sacred site is where Rishabhadeva, the first Jina, is said to have preached; his son, Bharata, later established here places of worship and traditions of lay patronage. Today, the site boasts over eight hundred temples and shrines that are visited by several hundred thousand pilgrims annually.
