Taweret is the Egyptian goddess of childbirth. She is depicted as a pregnant bipedal hippopotamus with the back of a Nile crocodile. The state is an amulet, to be worn around the neck. The fishbone detail on the back of the statuette represents the scales of the Nile crocodile, whereas the swollen belly shows the goddess’ role as a protector of pregnant women. The base of the statue is broken and so the feet and lower legs are missing
