Sunset Crater Volcano, Flagstaff, Arizona3D Model
Sunset Crater Volcano is a National Monument near Flagstaff, Arizona. This volcano is believed to have erupted around the year AD 1075. The date was driven mainly by tree ring dating, known as dendrochronology.
Archaeological evidence of Native American habitation at the time of the eruption is also shown with the discovery of pottery and corn cob imprints found within its lava features. Some of these items are believed to have been intentionally thrown into nearby spatter cone “hornitos” as offerings by the Sinagua Anasazi (Hisatsinom) peoples living in this and surrounding areas.
Sunset Crater was named by John Wesley Powell, who famously boated through the Grand Canyon in 1869, and is named so because of the red coloration of iron-rich cinders that seemed to glow in the last light of the setting sun.
The National Monument is also connected to Wupatki National Monument, a site of pre-Columbian Native American ruins and archaeology. -Nate Loper
