Sukeek's Cabin Site3D Model
Sukeek’s Cabin was the first home occupied by an African-American family after their emancipation, located at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM) in Calvert County, southern Maryland. The house was constructed c. 1870 and abandoned before 1920 but stood until at least 1952. According to eye-witness descriptions, the home was about 17ftx17ft but had two stories to maximize space under the (expensive) tin roof. The interior walls were covered in plaster over wood lath. It would have been within sight of the large house belonging to the family’s former captors for whom they probably still worked. A public excavation of the site found common domestic artifacts as well as a collection of artifacts related to education and home learning such as slate pencils, fragments of slate, and an alphabet plate (which is also published here on SketchFab).
