RAFFMA, EG.01.001.2002; Memphite region; Late Period: Late Dynasty 26, 589 - 525 BCE limestone
This round-top funerary stela illustrates fairly well what funerary stelae of the Late Period looked like. There are here two important functions. First there is a hieroglyphic offering spell at the bottom. This ensures a magical supply of offerings for the ka-soul of Sheshonq. Then there is the image at the top that shows Sheshonq being introduced into the presence of the gods Osiris and Isis. This scene is a critical summary of the trial in the afterlife and an assertion that it was successful for Sheshonq, so that he was allowed to proceed into the fields of the afterlife.
