Standing Stones of Yoxie, Pettigarths Field, Whalsay, Shetland Isles.
The standing stones of Yoxie are the site of an impressive Neolithic house. Prior to excavation by CST Calder in 1954-5 just the tops of some of the stones protruded through the peat, which is how the site got its name. Iron Age pottery was found in the house a long with lots of stone tools indicating a secondary phase of reoccupation.
This house is specifically known as ‘The Standing Stones of Yoxie’ but there is another much larger neolithic house close by known as the ‘Benie Hoose’ along with a chambered cairn and cist on the hill overlooking the site.
