More model informationPipe (specimen #096-580). The Berry Site (31BK22). Burke County, North Carolina. Excavated in 2017 by Warren Wilson College Field School. Unit: N824E211, level: Plowzone 1. Weight: 18.4 g. Material: Soapstone.
Remarks: This is a fragment of a Native American soapstone pipe used to smoke tobacco and other native plants. Most Native American pipes were made out of clay and occasional from stone. The soil inside this pipe bowl may contain burned organic materials and has not been removed to preserve potential analysis in the future. The pipe has embossed circles and a four-pointed star design that may represent the four directions and the cosmos, which is a common theme in Native American designs.
