More model informationSkull racks were once adorned with the heads of village big men and the heads of enemy warriors. In many Sepik cultures, the head is the most important part of the body and the presence of ancestral heads were necessary in overviewing ceremonies and monitoring for enemy raids.
This skull rack was produced in Angoram village, a village located in the East Sepik region. Due to its proximity to the coast, Angoram village was one of the first stops for tourists traversing the river.
