More model informationRip-up clasts are clasts of muddy sediment of variable size that are found within sandstone or conglomerate. They are formed when high energy currents erode pre-existing mud from the bottom of the basin and are transported as clasts that are later deposited at some distance. The impermeable and cohesive nature of muddy sediments allows rip up clasts to form in muddy sediments and therfore allowing the clasts to remain compact when torn away from the substratum by a current.
