The first wooden pier was constructed here in the 1830s as a landing stage for the ferry bringing visitors from Liverpool to the popular holiday resort of New Brighton. The pier was rebuilt in iron in 1867, as well as having the ferry landing pier, the main part of the structure was a promenade pier with a central observation tower for viewing shipping on the Mersey, saloon and refreshment rooms. The pier was dismantled in 1978 following a period of disuse.
The site was photographed in the near-infrared (720nm filter) the weed on the sandstone bedrock reflects more infrared light while water absorbs infrared light. The picture nicely shows different shaped post holes cut into the sandstone bedrock. Many of the post holes are filled with water, the infrared shows much better contrast between features than regular visible colour.
The large round post holes relate the iron structure, many of the square post holes are on a different alignment and seem to relate to the earlier wooden pier.
