More model informationDuring the 2022 and 2023 field seasons, an NEH-funded University of Rochester archaeology team excavated more than 550 contexts (Layers and features) and found substantial evidence of multiple post-and-beam early structures, as well as a large four-foot-deep pit that was filled in the 1680s with daub fragments from these earlier structures. Several large pieces of whalebone also found in the pit suggest it may have been used for mixing mortar for building an as-yet-undiscovered newer building. Excavations in adjoining areas will resume in May 2024 and be guided by ground penetrating radar surveys to anticipate precise feature positioning beforehand.
