Shimosamuraizuka kofun is thought of the local ruler’s tomb. Koichi Mori, a leading researcher of the Kofun period, introduced this kofun as “the most beautiful in Japan” in his book. About 330 years ago, Mitsukuni Tokugawa, the feudal lord of Mito, ordered the world’s first academic excavation survey and the detailed report writing of this kofun and Kamisamuraizukakofun 800m south of here. He also commanded to rebury grave goods and to maintain these tombs after investigation. His behavior like this is still appreciated as cultural property protection that is still valid today.
