More model informationThe name of the city of Parramatta originates from the Dharug words ‘Burra’ meaning place, and ‘Matta’ meaning Eels. This shelter is designed to pay respects to this through storytelling. The fishing of Eels in the Parramatta river was a large part of local diet and was therefore important, the shape of the structure takes inspiration from Eel traps that were used.
The shade provided allows cover during the hottest parts of the day starting from 11:30am till sun down. The stairs are intended for sitting and are placed out of shade cover to ensure people arent sitting for long extended periods of time. The overall design process was inspired by the bauhaus doctrine.
