Shang Dynasty pig statue Unearthed in Jiuhua, Xiangtan in 1981 This is the only wine statue in the shape of a pig from the Shang Dynasty. It weighs more than 30 kilograms and can hold 13 liters of wine. There are round holes across the front and rear elbows, and ropes can be worn for lifting. There are tusks on both sides of the mouth, resembling a wild boar. The body of the vessel is decorated with scales, dragon patterns and animal face patterns. The animal-shaped statue artistically expresses people’s primitive religious concepts. As a communication medium between humans and gods, it plays a witchcraft-like role in praying and warding off evil spirits. The body of the vessel has traces of repairs over the years, which should be a sign of long-term use.
