Seir Kieran High Cross Base3D Model
Seir Kieran (Saighir Chiaráin/St Kieran’s Seat on the brink of a stream) monastery (OF039-003001-) was founded by St. Kieran (Ciarán) the elder in the fifth century. March 5th is the feastday of Saint Ciarán of Saighir, one of the ‘twelve apostles of Ireland’, a ‘pre-Patrician saint’ and patron of the diocese of Ossory. According to tradition Ciarán built, ‘a cell in a dense wood, on the brink of a spring-fountain which was called Saiger’. The high cross base standing 75cm high was dug up out of the ground in 1937. The present east face is decorated from left to right with the bottom row depicting Nebuchadnezzar & his soldiers approaching the Three Children in the Fiery Furnace, with Adam & Eve to the right. The upper row possibly depicts David bringing the head of Goliath to Jerusalem, The Sacrifice of Isaac & two opposing horses. The north face possibly depicts a battle scene with figures holding spears? facing oncoming horses.
