More model informationThis is a Swan River Chert secondary flake. Secondary flakes are detritus from the middle stages of stone tool production, typically associated with the removal of flakes from a core or preparation of tool blanks. Swan River Chert outcrops in west-central Manitoba, though it can be found in cobble form in river valleys including the Bow River and Red Deer River as far west as Alberta. The pink color of this flake is a result of heat treatment, in which the raw material is heated to make it easier to knap.
Take a look at the model, can you tell where the flake was struck to remove it from the core?
