Item Name: The Sample Gates at Indiana Ave. and Kirkwood Ave.
Description: The Indiana University Sample gates serve as an entrance into the oldest part of the current Bloomington campus, known as the Old Crescent. The gates were constructed in 1987 with funding provided by Edson Sample. Among the most widely photographed structures on campus, they are constructed of Indiana Limestone and are typically surrounded by tulips in the Spring. Many campus and community organizations use the Sample Gates as a starting point for public protests. Before the gates were built, Kirkwood Avenue ran into campus and connected up with the access road that runs between the Student Building, Maxwell Hall and the IMU.
