Summary: ‘Closed’ diving helmet of the type used by the salavage divers working at Scapa Flow.
Unlike modern divers, who carry their air supply on their backs, the divers who worked on raising the German ships relied on air pumped down ro their enclosed helmets through a pip form the surface. The diver the breathed normall while an outlet valve released excess air. It also allowed the diver to contril their buoyancy. A specially sealed rubberised suit, or ‘diving dress’ was also worn. A telephone line connected to the helmet allowed the diver to communicate with the surface
