More model informationSaints Island Lough Derg, traditionally believed to be the location of an early medieval monastic settlement founded in the fifth century by St. Patrick, who installed St Dabheoc (Davog) as the first abbot. In medieval times an Augustinian priory was founded on the island. The primary function of the priory was to manage the medieval pilgrimages to the cave, known as St. Patrick’s Purgatory, located on nearby Station Island. Although it has been suggested by some that the original cave had been located on Saint’s Island and that the pilgrimage was later transferred to its present location on Station Island.
