More model informationThese types of ceramic vessels were used as secondary burial urns in areas of present-day Nicaragua and Costa Rica. These clay pots often contained bones that had been redeposited, or they sometimes were found to contain other smaller ceramic vessels nested into the urns.
This particular vessel is ornate, with an incised geometric design. Today, the piece is curated at the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in Bradenton, Florida. The urn came to the museum through the purchase of the JE Moore collection in 1950. Moore, was an amateur archaeologist and collector who amassed artifacts from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama areas- many relating to HE Hurst excavations. This piece is said to have been excavated in 1928 near Managua, Nicaragua.
