Rubha Port an-t Seilich excavation horizon 20213D Model
Islay field school site of Rubha Port an-t Seilich 2021. During late August/September 2021 we excavated more of this Mesolithic occupation horizon, overlooking the Sound of Islay, with stunning views across to Jura. We were visited by inquisitive seals, saw gannets dive and were also treated to a pod of dolphins following a sailing boat. Meanwhile we excavated 2 x 5cm spits across the gridded site, and several discreet features, including some very interesting boulder-lined pits and several smaller post holes and filled depressions. We 100% wet- sieve sampled all the soil excavated, from 50cm grid squares across the 5x4m trench and retrived thousands of finds, mainly of worked flint (totally almost 19,000 individual pieces), and also some quartz, coarse stone tools, rock crystal, plus thousands of tiny fragments of bone and charcoal.
