This is a Roman relief scultpure, or Basso Relievo, depicting Mithras slaying a bull. It was found by workmen in 1747 roughly 10ft below Micklegate, York. It likely dates to the 2nd or 3rd century CE.
William Stukely (a well known antiquarian) made a drawing of the sculpture shortly after it was excavated, although comparisions of this illustration to this scan show some notable differences. Use the annotation touch-points to reveal more information on the model and of the carving itself.
