One of several small prehistoric carved rocks found in a private plantation to the east of Rivock Edge on the SW end of Rombalds Moor, West Yorkshire.
Sitting immediately west of ‘Rivock 08’, this rock was recorded ‘Rivock 07’ by the CSI: Rombalds Moor project in 2012. Boughey & Vickerman had previously referenced the stone IAG 50 in their 2003 publication ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’, describing:
‘Small rock. Seven cups, grooves.’
The positions of at least two cups suggest that morphology may have influenced placement, as natural rings or partial rings appear in some lighting conditions.
The surrounding plantation was harvested and replanted in 2013. Hopefully, a glade created at the time will protect the stones from damage during future harvesting.
This decimated model created from 7 stereo pairs captured by Peter Butler (CSI Team) in June 2013. The imagery forms part of the HLF funded CSI: Rombalds Moor / Watershed Landscape Project archive.
