More model informationNew memorial dedicated to Richard Parker (d. 25 July 1884, aged 17) in the churchyard of St Mark’s and Pear Tree Church, Bitterne, Southampton. In 1884, Richard set sail from Southampton on a small yacht, the Mignonette, bound for Sydney. He was the cabin boy of a crew of four, including the Captain, Tom Dudley, Edwin Stephens and Edmund Brooks. The yacht sank and crew had to survive in remote waters in a life boat with no food. Nineteen days later Richard was comatose. Dudley and Stephens killed Richard and ate him in an act of cannibalism. Dudley and Stephens after surviving the ordeal were later charged with murder.
