Rainbow Hematite / Iridescent Hematite (Turgite)3D ModelNoAI
Locality: Elba Island, Italy
No.: 5296
Size: 5.3 x 4.3 x 2.2 cm
Formula: Fe2O3
Description: In modern usage ‘Turgite’ is often referred to as an iridescent ‘variety’ of either Hematite or Goethite (both are iron oxides). Usually, a thin film comprised of aluminum and phosphate was found to coat such Hematite. The thin films that range from tens to hundreds of nanometers thick are believed to cause the color.
Hematite is an iron mineral crystallizing in the rhombohedral system; the most important ore of iron, it is dimorphous with Maghemite, occurs in black metallic-looking crystals, in reniform masses or fibrous aggregates, or in reddish earthy forms. Hematite is also known as bloodstone; red hematite; red iron ore; red ocher; or rhombohedral iron ore.
