These are displayed at the Lismore Heritage Centre. Querns were used for grinding grain from prehistoric times onwards. From left to right : 1. Simple saddle quern, these were in use from Neolithic times for up to 5000 years. 2. Bun quern. This type begins the change to the rotary quern introduced by the Romans. This quern is from Tirfuir Broch, Lismore and is around 2000 years old. 3. High quality 17th-10thC rotary quern. This is the lower stone of the quern. It is a rare survivor as mill owners broke domestic querns to force people to use their mills. 4. fragment of an upper rotary quernstone. it was found at Achananard, a small township on Lismore, cleared of people twice between 1790 & 1840.
