A black granite head from a life-size statue of an unidentified Ptolemaic queen. The lower face has been recut, with the nose area restored. The figure wears a wig with echeloned curls and a headband. On her forehead is the remains of an uraeus, which is now damaged. The back pillar support has been smoothed, although it is void of any inscription. There are remains of an auction sticker on the forehead. Stylistically, the statue can be dated to the early Ptolemaic Period (c. 332–150 BC), and it is suggested that the queen depicted is either Berenice II or Arsinoe III. It was purchased by Sir Henry Wellcome in 1922 from the collection of the Reverend William MacGregor. On loan to the Egypt Centre since 1971 as part of the distribution of the Wellcome collection.
