More model informationFound in Salter Street, Eccles, near Manchester in 1889 this is understood to be a large fragment of a Pre-Norman cross. It was the only fragment recovered. A drawing reconstruction of the cross was undertaken in 1910 by J. J. Phelps, who was Honorary Secretary of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society and Eccles resident at the time. Today the fragment and drawing can be found in St. Mary the Virgin (Eccles Parish) Church, near the pulpit. Due to ‘prayer candles’ being lit next to the fragment wax has dripped onto it. Permission to take the photographs was granted by church officials to whom I am grateful. The image would have been improved had the lighting been better and more time available for taking the source photographs.
