More model informationPotomac Creek Ware is a type of low-fired indigenous ceramic that dates back to the Late Woodland period, between 900-1650 CE. One of the defining characteristics of this style of low-fired ceramic is the materials commonly used to “temper” the clay. Temper is when small bits of material, such as stone or shell, are added to a piece of ceramic before it is fired to strengthen clay. Potomac Creek Ware is commonly found with small bits of quartz and sand used as temper. This specific sherd of Potomac Creek Ware was found in Anne Arundel County.
