More model informationThe Roman Amphitheatre of Pompeii1(Italian: Roman Amphitheatre di Pompei)is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre. It is located in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, and was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79,which also buried Pompeii and neighboring Herculaneum (Herculaneum).
Built around 70 BC,the current amphitheatre was the first Roman amphitheatre to be built in stone. Previously, they had been built of wood. The next Roman amphitheatre to be built in stone would be the Colosseum of Rome, which is later than this one for more than a century. It was called a spectacula and not an Amphitheatre, as the latter term was not yet in use. It was built with the private funds of Quinctius Valgus and Marcius Porcius.
