Pebble Hammer, Wellington Quarry, Herefordshire3D Model
This stone artefact was found in excavations by Worcestershire Historic Environment and Archaeology Service undertaken in advance of quarrying at Wellington Quarry, Herefordshire, England.
Pebble hammers have been found in Mesolithic to Bronze Age contexts, but the surface grinding on this example dates it to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age (c.3800-1700 BC).
The perforation was created by pecking and the striations at the centre result from carving with a flint tool. Little wear is apparent on the perforation, so it’s unclear if this tool was hafted or strung for suspension.
The blunt edge of this tools is worn smooth, potentially indicating it was used for rubbing or polishing, but its precise function remains unclear.
